We are now offering youth classes!

The Youth Taiko Program is led by Megan Chao Smith, with 30 years experience playing, performing and teaching, including 12 years formally in Japan. They have led many youth groups, and hope youth will be interested to create ongoing ensembles.

Students learn the basics of different taiko styles, how to drum on beat, listen to one another, operate as a team, give and receive training. Students will learn how to listen to their bodies, take care of and condition their muscles, develop posture, and physical stage presence. They will receive or make their own drumsticks, called bachi. There will be an option for students to learn the Japanese bamboo flute. Through a traditional Japanese senpai-kohai system, students are expected to take leadership and ownership of the group as they learn. Youth groups are encouraged to create their own songs, and will have opportunities to perform them.

We also provide a dedicated LGBTQIA+ class for queer and questioning youth. We are happy to offer a special and safe queer space for young folks who identify with, or wonder if this might be their community. Please click here to sign up:
